DV Tree Version 2.3 (c) 1990-1991 Michael D. Weaver.
DESQview is a trademark of Quarterdeck Office Systems.
┌────────────┐
│ Overview │
└────────────┘
This document is provided to support installation of DV Tree on
hard drive systems. The following is a summary of what the various
installation steps will accomplish:
1) Create DV Tree's home directory, and copy its files to this
directory. Ideally, this will be C:\DV\DVTREE, D:\DV\DVTREE, or
E:\DV\DVTREE. Also, we will copy the files TZ-SCRIP.DVS, and TS-SCRIP.DVS
to your DESQview directory.
2) Install DVTXDI.COM in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you are
running DESQview 2.26 or higher.
3) Add the DV Tree PIFs (Program Information Files) to DESQview's
Open Menu.
4) Customize the PIFs using Change a Program if:
a) Your DV directory is not C:\DV or,
b) You do not have a color monitor.
5) Configure DV Tree so it knows where to find DESQview's files.
(not necessary if your DV directory is C:\DV.)
If you feel you can complete the above steps on your own, please
do so, then proceed to Step 8 below to verify a good installation.
┌───────────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 1: Hard Disk Installation │
└───────────────────────────────────┘
For DV Tree to be useful, it should be installed on your hard
disk. Since it is a DESQview specific program, the best place to put it
is in a subdirectory of the \dv directory, and the best name to give the
DV Tree subdirectory is DVTREE. Assuming all the DV Tree files are in
your current DOS directory, and the name of your DESQview directory is
c:\dv, type the following commands:
mkdir c:\dv\dvtree
copy *.* c:\dv\dvtree
copy *.dvs c:\dv
If your copy of DESQview is not installed in c:\dv, you should
replace c:\dv in each of the above commands with the path to your DESQview
page -2-
directory. If you have problems: Read the sections on directories in
your DOS manual.
┌───────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 2: Install DVTXDI.COM │
└───────────────────────────────┘
If your copy of DESQview is not version 2.26 or later, you should
skip this step. You may also wish to skip this step if your version of
DOS is less than 3.1 (DOS versions prior to 3.1 may need to be 'patched'
to accommodate DVTXDI.COM - if you are an experienced user, further
information on this is available in the DVTXDI.DOC file contained in
DVTXDI.ZIP.)
DVTXDI is an optional TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident)
program that utilizes services provided by DESQview versions 2.26 and
higher, and it allows DV Tree to be aware of every application running
in your DESQview system. To install it, use a text editor program to
add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
c:\dv\dvtree\dvtxdi.com
If your DV Tree directory is not c:\dv\dvtree, you will have to
modify the above line so that it specifies the full DOS pathname to
DVTXDI.COM.
If you are a user of QEMM, QRAM, or some other program with the
ability to load TSRs into 'high DOS memory', you should load DVTXDI.COM
'high' so that it doesn't reduce the amount of your 'conventional DOS
memory' (DVTXDI.COM requires only a few K, but every little bit helps!)
If you are unsure how to do this, refer to the documentation for your
memory management program.
Once you have placed DVTXDI.COM in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, reboot
your system so that DVTXDI.COM will be loaded into memory.
┌───────────────────────────┐
│ Step 3: Start DESQview │
└───────────────────────────┘
DV Tree is a DESQview specific program and may only be run in
the DESQview multitasking environment. If you are not currently working
within DESQview, please start DESQview now.
page -3-
┌────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 4: Add DV Tree to DESQview │
└────────────────────────────────────┘
Ideally, you should run DV Tree in its own DESQview window. To
enable this, we will use DESQview's Add A Program facility:
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type O (for 'Open')
Type AP (for 'Add a Program')
Type O (for 'Other')
Key in your DV Tree path (probably 'c:\dv\dvtree')
At this point, you should see three different entries for
'DESQview Tree ..'. Using your cursor keys, position the cursor bar over
each entry, and hit your space bar. Once all three entries are
highlighted, move the cursor bar over 'Done', and hit Enter.
It is possible that DESQview will tell you there is a 'Key
Conflict' with respect to one or more of the three entries. If this
happens, you will need to change the 'Open Keys' for DV Tree. Pick any
set of two keys that you like, but remember what they were supposed to be;
this documentation, and the manual for DV Tree, will occassionally refer
to one of these three entries by their original 'Open Keys'. An important
note here: The DESQview script files, TZ-SCRIP.DVS, and TS-SCRIP.DVS, are
provided to give you an easy way to maintain a single set of scripts for
DV Tree. They do this by loading 'TL-SCRIP.DVS' at startup, so if you
change the 'Open Keys' for the TL window, you will have to relearn these
scripts.
After you have resolved any key conflicts (or if there were none),
tell DESQview you're 'Done' one more time.
You should now find the following three entries for DV Tree on
DESQview's 'Open Menu':
DESQview Tree (Slim) TS
DESQview Tree 100K TL
DESQview Tree (Pop-Up) TZ
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 5: Customize the Open Menu entries if necessary │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
If your DV Tree directory is c:\dv\dvtree
and you are installing DV Tree on a color system
then... You may skip this step.
page -4-
Each of 'Open Menu' entries you created in Step 4 assume that the
full DOS path to DVTREE.EXE is c:\dv\dvtree\dvtree.exe. Since this is not
true on your system, we must use DESQview's 'Change A Program' to modify
the entries just added. Also, if your DV Tree directory is not
d:\dv\dvtree or e:\dv\dvtree, you will need to tell DV Tree where you have
put it:
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type O (for 'Open')
Type CP (for 'Change a Program')
Type a set of 'Open Keys' (TS, TL, TZ)
Hit TAB 4 times (to the Program...: field)
Key the full pathname to DVTREE.EXE.
if your DV Tree directory is not d:\dv\dvtree, or e:\dv\dvtree:
TAB 1 time (to the Parameters: field)
Cursor to the end of the line if something is already
there, and add a space.
Type TREE= followed immediately by the full DOS
pathname to your DV Tree directory.
Example: TREE=F:\DV23\DVTREE
if you do not have a color system, you should now:
Hit F1 (for advanced options)
TAB to 'Uses its own colors'
Type 'N'
Hit Enter when you're through.
You should follow the above procedure once for each of the three
sets of 'Open Keys' (TS, TL, and TZ.)
┌──────────────────────────┐
│ Step 6: Start DV Tree │
└──────────────────────────┘
If all has gone well, you should now be able to start DV Tree for
the first time:
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type O (for 'Open')
Type TL (for 'DESQview Tree 100K')
page -5-
At this point, DV Tree should come up in a full screen window, and
after a delay, inform you that it is 'Building DOS Tree'. If, instead of
this, DESQview returns an error message, go back to Step 5 and make sure
that you have specified the full pathname to DVTREE.EXE correctly.
It is possible that your hard drive has more subdirectories than
DV Tree, in its default configuration, is set up to handle. If this is
true, you will see a message like this: "Tree > Tree Max Size - Key Z-C-T
to fix". If you see this message:
Hit ESC (to remove the message)
Hit Z (for 'Zpecial')
Hit C (for 'Configure DV Tree')
Hit T (for 'Tree Size Max')
You may now enter a numeric value for the number of directories
you wish DV Tree to be able to handle per 'logical DOS drive'. The
program will accept any value up to 999, but you should probably enter a
lower, more realistic value as the number you use affects the amount
of memory DV Tree requires to run. Once you have done this, hit ESC twice
to return to DV Tree's main screen, and exit DV Tree by hitting Q (to
Quit), and Y (for Yes), then restart DV Tree.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 7: Tell DV Tree where DESQview is installed │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
If your DESQview directory is c:\dv
then... You may skip this step.
For some of its more advanced functions, DV Tree must know the
pathnames to some of DESQview's files. Since on your system, this is
not c:\dv, you must do the following from DV Tree's main screen:
Hit Z (for 'Zpecial')
Hit C (for 'Configure DV Tree')
Hit D (for 'DESQ Directory')
Type your DESQview directory path
Hit Enter
Hit . (for '.DVP Directory')
Type your DESQview directory path
Hit Enter
page -6-
┌───────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Step 8: Verify a good Installation │
└───────────────────────────────────────┘
This section assumes that DV Tree is now running on your
system. If so, you may perform the following tests to ensure that all
the above steps have been successfully performed:
1) Verify correct specification of DESQview directories:
From DV Tree's main screen:
Hit Z (for 'Zpecial')
Hit D (for 'DESQview Functions')
If you see something that looks like the DESQview Open Window
Menu on the right hand side of your screen, all is well. If not, ensure
you correctly performed Step 7 (specifically, the DESQ directory
pathname.)
2) If you have more than one hard drive partition, make sure your Tree Max
Size is sufficient:
From DV Tree's main screen:
Hit > (to get the 'Switch Drives' menu)
Select a letter for a hard drive partition.
This menu should have a letter entry for each logical DOS drive
on your system, and you should repeat this step for each letter related to
a hard drive. DV Tree will build a DOS tree for each drive, and if you
receive a message saying "Tree > Tree Max Size", refer to Step 6 to see
how to increase DV Tree's max tree size value.
3) Make sure DV Tree knows where to put its files:
Hit T (to bring up the Tree)
Cursor down to the DVTREE directory.
Hit Enter
Hit S (for 'Sort')
Hit D (for 'Date/Time')
Hit Y (for 'Descending')
You should now see the file display sorted with the most recently
created files at the top of the display. If you see entries like:
DVTREE.CNF
DVTREE_C
then all is well. If not, refer back to step 5 (specifically, the
steps on setting up TREE=.) (By the way, DV Tree has probably put these
files in your root directory by mistake.)
page -7-
4) Make sure the other program definitions are okay:
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type O (for 'Open')
Type TS (for 'DESQview Tree (Slim)')
* If DESQview presents an error message, go back to Step 5 and make sure
that you have specified the full pathname to DVTREE.EXE correctly.
* If you receive a message saying "Tree > TMAX= on command line":
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type C (for 'Close')
Type Y (for 'Yes')
Tap your DESQ key (probably ALT)
Type O (for 'Open')
Type CP (for 'Change a Program')
Type TS
Hit TAB 5 times (to the Parameters: field)
Use your delete key to remove the TMAX=nnn parameter.
Hit Enter and go back to the beginning of this test.
* If DV Tree says it is 'Building DOS Tree', then refer back to step 5
to fix the TREE= parameter (it is wrong for this program definition.)
Repeat this step for Open Keys TZ (DESQview Tree (Pop-Up))
┌──────────────────────┐
│ Step 9: What now? │
└──────────────────────┘
If you have reached this step, DV Tree should be correctly
installed on your system. You should now print the DV Tree manual by
typing COPY DVTREE.DOC PRN from the DOS command line, and follow it
sequentially - much of it is written in tutorial (or semi-tutorial) form.
If you are anxious to stop reading about, and start using DV Tree,
the manual is still highly recommended - please see the section in it
titled "A Note for the Impatient".
By now, you may have guessed that DV Tree is a highly customizable
system. This is true. DVTREE.DOC contains sections that tell you:
1) How to customize the screen colors.
2) How to make the most of the memory used by the program.
3) How to set up DV Tree for use in EGA/VGA systems running in
high-resolution modes.
page -8-
4) How to have DV Tree come up positioned to one, or even two,
of your favorite directories.
5) How to set up a quick help system for DV Tree.
6) How to use DV Tree to launch other DESQview applications and
load other DESQview applications with files - even
applications that are already running.
And, of course, how to use DV Tree to take control over your hard
disk and much, much more....
